Curriculum
Curriculum
- The occupational therapy curriculum emphasizes the foundational content of occupation and integrates applied science and conditions throughout the program. The curriculum culminates in clinical fieldwork experiences, including rural settings, and a capstone project where students apply their knowledge and skills to address real-world needs in the field.
- The AHEC program is integrated with the occupational therapy doctorate program, offering students inter-professional experiences and community-based healthcare opportunities. Through AHEC, students collaborate with diverse healthcare professionals, serving underserved populations and gaining valuable interdisciplinary perspectives.
Fieldwork and Capstone
Fieldwork
- At the beginning of their studies, students take part in Fieldwork Level 1. Integrated into their coursework, this allows them to learn through hands-on experience working with different types of clients from various groups, including rural communities, pediatrics, psychosocial, and adult populations. Fieldwork 1 may also include virtual simulations.
Fieldwork 2 may require relocation. This may include extra costs like travel, housing, and everyday expenses. The skills and knowledge gained from this experience prepare students for a successful future as occupational therapists.
Capstone
- The OTD Capstone is a 14-week culminating project. Under the guidance of their faculty mentor, students perform a literature review, needs assessment, goals/objectives, and an evaluation plan in one of the following areas. Clinical practice skills, research, program and policy development, leadership, advocacy, administration, education, or theory development. This project shows the student’s ability to think critically, solve problems, and use research-based methods. It highlights their preparedness for professional work and how they can contribute to the field of occupational therapy.

Facilities
ADL Lab
- The Activities of Daily Living (ADL) lab is a simulated environment where students practice and enhance their skills in assisting individuals with self-care, mobility, and household tasks. Equipped with the features of a home environment, students learn to assess, evaluate, and develop customized interventions to promote independence and improve the quality of life for their future clients.
